[Songwriting 101 - 32 hours]

Scheduled right after Music Theory 101, this practicum class gives students the first opportunity to write and produce music using the skills learned in MTK 101 and the tools learned in the first round of classes- either Pro Tools, Reason, LIVE or Logic Pro. Students will come to the first day of class with examples of the style of music they wish to write in and we will perform an analysis of the genre and style. Weekly progress of the work will occur and we will see how the student integrates the MTK 101 material into their music.

Topics include:

• Genre and instrumentation analysis

• Melodic/ Harmonic analysis and technique

• Study of tempo, meter as applied to form and arrangement

• Melodic construction and harmonic orchestration

• Analysis of emotional intent and execution
