GRAMMY Career Day: Hip-Hop D.I.Y.

Grammy Career Day: HipHop - D.I.Y

GRAMMY Career Day is a national outreach program that provides insight to high school students about careers that are available in music and direction on how ot prepare for them. Held on university campuses in more than a dozen cities each year, these daylong conferences allow students to discuss with industry professionals what it's like to work in music while learning what it takes to be successful in the field. On January 19th 2006, the SF Chapter of NARAS hosted the annual event at SF State Universities campus. Over seven hundred Bay Area high school students were in attendance and given the opportunity to listen to industry panels and participate in fourteen different workshops. Pyramind students Dion, Sinh, Tino, Ashley, Lucas, Cameron, Geordan, Sheila, Ryan and Bryan, volunteered to assist the SF NARAS staff in producing a hugely well received event. The HipHop D.I.Y. workshop was one of many workshops at Grammy Career Day which was produced by the SF Chapter of NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) and hosted by San Francisco State University. The workshop featured Oakland’s Balance and Knocademus and SF NARAS governor and producer Greg Gordon getting students to flow like a pro over freshly dropped beats they built in the workshop. Always a popular workshop, this year students had a new edge; the panelists would pick two students to perform in the afternoon before the entire audience.>>check out pics and the resulting track!>>

Approximately 50-60% of these children are inner-city kids in the low or no–income bracket. Some are living in homeless shelters and the majority of these kids are either of Latino, African-American or Asian decent. PB&JAMMusic Sessions for Kids™ is all about providing free weekend afternoon music workshops for kids of all ages and flavors in these under-served communities. They will experiment with musical instruments or simply learn how to move to their own rhythm. They may record a song(s) or record their peers, design, create and produce their own CDs and market them to sell for profit. They will learn how to put together an entire production. The blueprint for each project is:TEAM ~ DEDICATION ~ PLAN ~ MARKETING ~ PERFORMANCE ~ RECORDING
