At only 18 years old, Tyler Straub has already proven to
be one of Pyramind’s most promising and talented students. While
Tyler’s primary genre is Drum and Bass, his influences are all over
the map, “My influences are constantly changing. Probably the
strongest to date are Coltrane and Mingus; for the way they used
humor in their music with avante guard style, Jeremy & Julian Soule;
for their orchestral works and what they are doing for the Video Game
world, and Noisia, by a long shot; for the world of drum n' bass. And
as always, Buddy Rich... the greatest drummer in the world, yes, I'm
biased.”
Tyler’s decision to come to Pyramind was simple, “I
chose Pyramind over other programs for what the school addressed as a
whole. They offered exactly the training I needed to go forward as an
Engineer as well as a Composer. When I look back at what I actually
knew about being an engineer as well as a composer, it's scary what
less than a year of solid training can do. My education at Pyramind
has unlocked a vast array of skill sets, taking everything I've
wanted to learn and turning it into a reality. They have also offered
me an understanding of what I'm doing musically, and for me that’s
priceless.” Aside from “the never ending project” of refining his
production workflow and “trying to get my Drum n' Bass production to
a point I'm satisfied with,” Tyler’s current projects include a
collaboration with Dustin Musser (AKA Frost_Raven) and “getting [his]
feet wet in the world of post production at Audio SFX™ in Novato.” Tyler gives due credit to all of Pyramind’s Instructors,
but when asked who has been most influential in his progress as an
artist, Tyler replied, “William Storkson is a major part of my
success thus far. His knowledge and experience as an engineer were
invaluable to me, and his classes were very enjoyable to sit through.
As far as what I'm doing musically however, I owe that to Anthony Peterson.
His writing exercises and musical concepts challenged me to do something
different, and still do today.” Upon graduation from Pyramind, Tyler’s goals are to work
on his ability as an instrumentalist and further develop his sound as
a producer. “I also intend to make a living in the world of post,
hoping that one day composition will be my day job.” Background On “Facemelt Sonata”: “This tune was built up more or less in a day. It was started as a joke to see what my orchestral movements would sound like with my signature "face-melting" bass and breaks. Turns out it almost worked. Although it's exciting, I still feel that it's just a start of much more to come.”
