Pyramind History

Home » About » Pyramind History
Pyramind was founded in 1987 by Gregory J. Gordon as one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s first fully-integrated MIDI and digital audio production facilities. Greg developed Pyramind by recording his own bands as well as many Bay Area recording artists. Early projects included working on multiple albums with Bay Area luminary Merl Saunders and his collaborations with The Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia as well as Greg’s group Native Budz which helped launch the Bay Area Trip Hop sound. In 1996 Greg expanded Pyramind’s operations to address the needs of the growing Dot Com industry which led Pyramind to grow into commercial Post Production and interactive audio development.
Soon after, Greg diversified Pyramind’s reach again with training and networking resources for students and professionals in the new digital audio industry. Pyramind grew quickly as it pioneered the process of integrating training in a real-world studio environment.
In 1997, Greg was invited to develop the Digital Audio program at San Francisco State University’s Multimedia Studies Program, and was then asked to teach digital audio production classes and Pro Tools to film students at the Academy of Arts College and The California Recording Institute. In 2000, Pyramind became a registered non-degree granting institution with the California Bureau for Private Post Secondary Education.

Also in 2000, Greg partnered with  Matt Donner, who brought with him his years as a New York City based engineer, producer,  and acclaimed digital audio specialist. Matt came on board as Chief Engineer for Pyramind’s commercial studio clients, as well as an instructor for, and ultimately co-architect of  Pyramind’s training programs.
In 2001, Pyramind’s original facilities were remodeled to better accommodate the demand for classes and Pyramind’s ever-growing client and student base. At that time, Pyramind became one of Digidesign’s (Now Avid) first official training centers as a sponsored school, well ahead of the rest of the world. In addition, Pyramind began offering training in Logic Audio, a long-standing tool formerly reserved for composers of film-scores. This training was well in advance of the purchase of the software company by Apple, and well before any formal Logic Certification program.

By April of 2003, Pyramind had outgrown its original space of operations and began renovations of the current facility at 880 Folsom St. in order to accommodate its still-growing student body and production clientele. In September of 2003, Pyramind opened for business at this new location.

Then in 2007, Pyramind expanded yet again by acquiring an additional facility right down the street at 832 Folsom, which had previously been home to Universal Music’s Northern California distribution head quarters.

Pyramind now occupies over 10,000 square feet of space and has five studios, two multi-station labs, plus event and conference space all on Folsom St., conveniently located less than two blocks from The Moscone Convention Center in downtown San Francisco.
