Ableton Live - Haunted Sound Pack for Collision
By Chris Gear, Pyramind Sound Design Instructor
"This collection of sounds, made with Collision, was inspired by Halloween in a way. I sat down and began thinking about how horror sounds don't necessarily need to be horrific or scary on their own, but perhaps only slightly disturbing, unsettling or maybe even just a bit 'off' in some way. It's more about how they get used. This lead me in the direction of ambient sounds in general, because there is just so much creative freedom allowed in the sound design process for ambient sounds.
Collision is a physical modeling synth that is intended to be used for the creation of traditional mallet-based and percussion instruments. It also does well with string sounds, but I am usually one to go in the complete opposite direction with synths just to see what they can really do. Since I don't work with Ableton much at all, and this was my first time touching Collision, I felt that I had a direction that I liked for the sound pack... Haunted Sounds, leaning toward the ambient side of the spectrum. It felt far enough away from 'drum sounds' that I felt confident I could deliver something truly unique and immersive in just a handful of sounds.
So here they are, 20 sounds for Collision that I hope you can put to good use in your own projects and maybe even learn from. Enjoy!"
