The process of producing Jazz records is quite different from most of the other genres in which we mentor. Due to its improvisational nature, Jazz tends to feature an element of spontaneity that you won't find elsewhere. However, for the most part, Jazz song structure and arrangement is still clearly defined and well rehearsed. Most Jazz band leaders have an arranger that they work closely with on their charts to showcase the players in the ensemble.
A solid Jazz producer needs to have a good understanding of the genre's history, a working knowledge of Jazz theory, and the ability to create an environment where the players feel comfortable.
