Most credit Detroit as the birthplace of Techno, with early pioneers such as Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May leading the way to what ultimately became a massive sound for the underground. Germany was quick to adopt and put their own spin on it, with Berlin being a mecca for the genre today.
Sonic characteristics include the classic Roland machines, such as 808 and 909 drums, along with the TB-303 acid sound. However, sub-genres of Techno today can include many different sound sources and styles, while still retaining the hypnotic, evolving soundscapes that are typical to Techno.
